RECREATION

IN BALANCE

Chaffee County’s stunning landscapes and fantastic recreation opportunities contribute significantly to the community’s quality of life. Residents highly value the natural beauty and local access to public lands, which is the main reason many choose to call Chaffee County home.

Recreation is growing every year as more people move here and the community is discovered as a recreation destination. Growth is a win for the local economy but residents are becoming concerned about negative impacts to the health of the land. Trash, human waste, and trail erosion into waterways are evidence of the consumptive use. Impacts include disrespectful and even dangerous behaviors such as abandoned smoldering campfires. These challenges are likely to multiply yet public lands provide the backbone of the county’s tourism economy that contributes one-third of our economic product.

Envision Recreation in Balance helps manage the impacts of growth to protect our quality of life and the benefits of a recreation economy. The vision is to maintain healthy public lands, quality experiences and a sustainable recreation economy into the future. The two-year, grant funded program involves more than 60 stakeholders working together to deliver a community-driven framework that includes thoughtful, active and ongoing solutions.

WHERE WE WORK.

WE'RE MONITORING IMPACTS

RIMS is a smartphone application that allows trained volunteers to record and geotag on-the-ground impacts. Data collection includes the size of campsites, number of campfire rings, cut tree limbs, evidence of human waste such as TP “flowers,” trash, soil erosion and more. More than 100 volunteers are trained to use RIMS in Chaffee County and they have completed 1,150 assessments.

WE'RE FIXING ISSUES

Rapid Response Projects are on-the-ground solutions to problems identified by RIMS and map data. Projects involve erecting a fence to prevent expansion of dispersed campsites and installing portable toilets in areas of high use. Join us to help plan new projects!
